Seems like just yesterday you waited in line for 8 hours to buy your lovely iPad 2 didn't it? You needed "Da Two" cause "Da Wun" was mad clunky, thick and no longer cool. In fact it was coolo. Kinda like Twilight. (J/K. But seriously, I like my vampire movies more gory, ie Kouta Hirano's Hellsing.)Anyway...get your interrobangs ready for the launch of. The. iPad 3!?
Instead of going into my usual rant about how lame it is to chase technology allow me on this Friday afternoon to take an opposite approach. You see recently I had an epiphany.
It was while I was playing Super Smash Bros. I never used to like that game. I mean I'm a big fan of Rampage and see tremendous value in all out venting, button mashing, Oreo cookie eating, pickle juice drinking, chicken gristle eating, biscuit sucking (sorry I'm listening to Biggie right now) video games, but I never understood Super Smash Brothers until recently.
I was playing with my girlfriend, her girlfriend, and her boyfriend. That guy was a coolo. I was using Pikachu as I usually do, and Mr Coolo was kicking my tiny yellow Pokemon ass up and down the screen. Then something clicked.
You know that scene in Face Off where everyone's shooting at one another and the kid puts on the headphones and the whole scene plays out to...to...I think it's Blue Danube waltz or some other classical masterpiece? Yeah I had one of those momenets and I started smashing Mr Coolo like poetry. Like I was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
I heard Morgan Freeman's voice from Wanted in my head, "he can conduct symphonies with a Nintendo controller..."
Oops. Where was I? Oh yeah...chasing tech. There's a saying about men's suits. Buy the best you can afford. And I feel that goes for computers too. And the corollary of that is buy the best phone you can afford. But I don't mean just every couple of years. Or when you feel like it. I mean setting aside a monthly budget for tech spending like organizations do.
Why?
Because this is 2012. You have to stop thinking like your parents. A computer is a not an adding machine. And a phone is not a talking box. iPhones are central life devices. So if you have to upgrade your central life device every 6 months, that's the price of being connected. Think of the quantum productivity gains you have over the plebs. And stop being cheap about it! If you can afford to shell out 245 dollars for a pair of vintage skinny jeans, you can damn well afford whatever Apple asks you to pay when the iPad 3 launches.
Side note of a side note: In China, when an iPhone or iPad is released, there are 3 types of buyers.
- One will complain that it's too pricey. And wait until the end of the product cycle to jump on board.
- One deems it a necessity and puts themselves on the waiting list for availability. Usually 90 days later.
- The last group buys it on the black market for a 100% mark up.
The benefits of being in that last group is that you can blog about it and make videos about it days ahead of every one else. You can make cases and accessories for it. It's not about cool. It's about business opportunities that a few days or weeks headstart can help you bust. Bust a move that is. That's one reason why the iPhone is such a hit in China. Sure people are buying it to use. But a large percentage of those buyers are buying for the business opps that come with owning the world's coolest gadget.
